What Are Far Infrared Waves?
Electromagnetic waves between visible light and the microwave are called infrared waves. The wave lengths of infrared waves range from 0.76 micron to 1000 microns. One micron is one millionth of a meter or one thousandth of a millimeter (mm). Far infrared wave lengths of our interest range from 5 to 15 microns.
FIR Penetrates Deeply
Furthermore since the FIR wave deeply penetrates organic substances (like humans) and water (2 to 3 inches), the warming effect is very uniform. If organic substances are heated by near infrared (NIR) waves (wave lengths of 0.76 to 5 microns), the surface gets hotter than the interior, and the interior gets heated by conduction means from the surface.
In the winter time, we feel comfortable with a sweater on when the room air temperature is 80F. However, in the summer time, we feel comfortable with short sleeve shirts on with the same room air temperature of 80F. The explanation is that although the air temperature is the same, the walls and ceiling radiate FIR waves in the summer time that warm our bodies even more....
